Turkey: Crisis of the bourgeoisie; resistances of the revolutionaries

May 2007

During the recent process, many important political developments took place in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan; among them the fierce attacks against the national Kurdish movement, the big trial against the September 10 Prisoners, the crisis around the presidency elections and Mayday.

We, the Coordination Committee of the Conference of Communist and Workers’ Parties of the Balkans, observe all these developments with concern and interest. We strongly condemn all the chauvinist attacks of the dictatorship in Turkey against the national Kurdish movement and the revolutionary and communist movement and express that during this intensive process of the political developments we are standing on the side of the working class and the labouring people of Turkey and Northern Kurdistan.

In Turkey, the concept of denial and annihilation of the dictatorship, which aims at breaking the will of the Kurdish national movement and the revolutionary and communist movement, is still valid. We saw this again many times in the near past: In September and December mass detention against revolutionaries and communist took place followed by the closing down of Kurdish patriotic newspapers and again mass detentions. The chauvinist murder of the Armenian journalist Hrant Dink and the brutal attack of the police against the meeting for “Freedom and Justice in April 13 in Besiktas on the occasion of the hearing of the September 10 prisoners and also the massacre of Christians in Malatya are some of the most striking examples.

Today, the situation is much tensed in Turkey because of the increasing contradictions of the regime’s inner forces around the presidential elections, which is presented as a conflict on the axis of secularism and Sharia. Here also, we can easily see that despite of the debates of democracy and reforms it is still the MGK (National Security Council) holding the power in Turkey, and nobody else.

But on the other hand, the anti-fascist, revolutionary struggle increases against the fascist state being unmasked more and more every day. Despite of the partly successful attempts of the army to gather the masses behind it by organising mass meetings in Ankara and Istanbul under the slogan of “against the Islamic, reactionary forces, for secularism”, reality shows very clear who represents reaction and fascism in Turkey and is responsible for uncountable crimes and counterrevolutionary attacks. One of these massacres was the one on Mayday 1977 at the Taksim square, whose 30th anniversary was this year.

On Mayday 2007, the workers and labourers of Turkey and Northern Kurdistan conquered the banned Taksim Square again after 30 years. In spite of all the attempts to divide the working class and to stop it with repression, in spite of 799 detentions and innumerable gas bombs, the masses flocked towards the Taksim Square and the police was not able to stop them.

Chauvinism and racist hate campaigns of the bourgeoisie are problems we are faced with in almost all the countries of the Balkans and only the united struggle against that will allow us to defeat them – in Turkey and all other countries of the Balkans. We express our solidarity with the revolutionary and communist forces in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan.

We demand an end of all the denial and annihilation attacks against the Kurdish national movement and the revolutionary and communist movement!
We express our solidarity with the September 10 prisoners, freedom now!
Stop the chauvinist aggression - Long live the brotherhood of the peoples!
